CZW/Chikara wrestler Drew Gulak visits Israel (for hebrew, read the
Blog)
This wednesday (december 30th) Drew Gulak, a jewish-american
that wrestles in Chikara Pro, CZW and Big Japan Wrestling, visited Israel.
You can view his profile here
at CZW`a site. The 22 year old was trained by Mike Quakenbush, Chris Hero
and the legendary luchador Jorge "Skayde" Rivera. Drew, who resides in
Philly and performs a lot at the famous ECW arena, made his debut in 2004
and amongst other accomplishments is a former 2 times CZW Tag Team champion.
Although CZW has a reputation for being "garbage" and "ultra-violent" wrestling,
Drew`s matches mostly concist of clean, pure wrestling. While at our training
facility, Drew praised the IPWA stars and shared some of his great knowledge
of the game that he learned through-out his wrestling career. IPWA couldn`ve
asked for a better guy to deliver us a "clinic"! In addition to being one
of the nicest and most respectable people you`ll ever meet, Drew is a true
inspiration to Indy wrestlers all around the world - Drew works, studies
for a degree and fulfils his dream as a pro-wrestler. Drew is a young man
with a great passion for the business, with great respect and appreciation
for the basics and the old school way of thought, while he`s just as good
at all the modern day tricks that today`s fans go crazy for. We thank Drew
for the great time we had and hope to have him back with us in the future,
maybe even part of a show.

Style" beat Mr. L, Ben "Iceman" Rozin defeated BBoy Adrenaline with help
from Neta "The Queen" Mashav, Shay Blanco won the Young Lions Elimination
Rumble, Chris Korvinn vs. Evgeny Lyder`s Hardcore match ended in a draw
when Lyder submitted to Korvinn`s submission hold while his shoulder were
counted on the mat, Eyal Smiley upset Big Bokstein. During the match Smiley
nailed a dangerous plancha over the ropes to the outside that almost took
out the entire locker room curtain, mega celeb Killer Degani beat Devil
Stormy with help from Chuchu and Simon, IPWA champ Yossi the Bull retained
against Tough Asaf.
Pro
Wrestling began in Israel in early 70s with Rafael Halperin, who wrestled
for Vince Sr.`s Capitol Wrestling in the 50s. Halpern vs. "Abu Antar" sold
out the "Yad Eliyahu" arena. The 80s brought Von Erichs' WCCW and WWF programming
to Israel via Lebanese, Middle East and Jordanian TV. Von Erichs came for
a very successful tour that engraved their name into Israeli culture and
history. A decade later, after wandering through foreign networks WWF started
airing on Israeli Sports channel. In the mid 90s WWF made their way to
the holy land as well. Since then pro wrestling programming has been wandering
between various local and foreign channels.
In late 2001 lifelong wrestling fan Gery Roif, who lead the campaign
that brought back WWE programming to Israel, created the first wrestling
promotion in Israel - "Israeli Pro Wrestling Association". Gery Roif also
became the first IPWA champion by defeating Shawn Michaels` Academy graduate,
Joey Tylec on the 24th of July, 2003 during an Israeli MMA event that aired
on Israeli-Russian channel 9.
IPWA
ran in the Netanya area and received national exposure via various TV appearances
and newspaper articles. IPWA "Passover Bash" 2004 coverage on Channel 2
evening news was watched by over million Israelis. IPWA`s biggest event
"Summer Splash" III in the summer of 2004 featured FWA British wrestling
superstar Aviv Maayan, who teamed up with Hawaii Allen against Yossi The
Bull and Jumping Lee, with Joey Tylec finally beating Gery Roif for the
IPWA title in the main event. "Summer Splash III" was filmed for Cable
News and got the promotion even more publicity.
In
2005 Gery Roif, Renan Gluzman and Ishai Ravid developed a satiric wrestling
series for Israel`s comedy channel "Bip", called "Makkat Medina". During
the filming of Makkat Medina both Bret Hart and Kevin Von Erich visited
Israel and met with the crew. The
show featured some of the best moments in Israeli Pro Wrestling (Rabi Swissa
vs. Vladimir, Mr. Weiss vs. Amit Romem and others), yet was also ridiculed
in some of the worst levels. Makkat Medina received lots of publicity in
the media, for better or for worse. After the show wasn`t picked for 2nd
season, IPWA tried to rebound with producer Ben Hilfer by holding events
in night clubs and taping "Wrestlenovella" for the British Wrestling Channel
that aired in early 2006.
With WWE announcing a tour in Israel in the summer of 2006 promoter
Gery Roif arranged internal
tryouts for Israeli Wrestlers with the winner being looked at by WWE agents
upon their arrival. With
hopes high IPWA and Allen Razam managed to promote "Summer Splash" V on
Herzlya beach, feauturing Yossi the Bull vs. Gery Roif in an Iron Man match
and Hawaii Allen vs. Jumping Lee for the IPWA title. However, WWE had to
cancel their tour due the 2nd Lebanon war.
In
2007 IPWA teamed up with Maccabi Tel-Aviv boxing club and FLIX website
for "Summer Splash" 2007 with Israeli celebs Michal Gavrielov, Zohar Israel,
Dror Nobleman, as well as Bret Hart`s ex Julie Hart, feauturing Omry Balely
vs. Gery Roif and a championship match between Sharon Palty and Yossi the
Bull.
In late 2007 TNA announced a tour in Israel as well. Promoter
Gery Roif was also scheduled to host TNA`s press conference upon TNA`s
arrival. However, due low ticket sales TNA shows were cancelled as
well.
Since then IPWA has settled in at Maccabi Tel-Aviv`s boxing club, holding
weekly training sessions at the facility, as well as presenting 4 annual
events at the club: Passover Bash, Summer Splash, Sukkot Brawl and Hannukkah
Classic.
